Skin Cancer Treatment

What is Skin Cancer Treatment?

There are a number of methods of treating each individual skin cancer. To optimize clinical outcomes, treatment must be individualized to each patient, each skin, cancer type and stage of growth, and the location on the body. Our doctors will work with you to determine a skin cancer treatment that is appropriate for you. Methods of treating skin cancer can include excision (using a scalpel blade to remove the affected tissue), Mohs micrographic surgery, electrodesiccation and curettage, cryosurgery, topical, chemotherapy, and superficial radiation treatment.

Why to see a dermatologist for treatment of skin cancer?

Dermatologic oncology is our forte! Dermatologists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers. Our specialty and subspecialty training focuses on the proper identification and care of tumors of the skin and their appropriate treatment.

If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer and need help arranging or coordinating your treatment, please contact our clinic as soon as possible.

How a dermatologist performs skin cancer treatments

Skin cancer excisions are small surgeries performed in our clinic procedure rooms using local anesthetic. During a standard surgical excision, your doctor will remove the entire tumor with a border of healthy tissue. They will then close the incision with sutures. The tissue that is removed will be sent to a laboratory for examination by a dermatopathologist to confirm that the entire skin cancer has been removed. You will leave our clinic with a bandage, written wound care instructions, dressing supplies if needed, and a follow-up plan.
