Hair Loss

What is alopecia?

Hair loss is known in dermatology by its clinical name, alopecia. Alopecia is a group of conditions characterized by hair loss that can affect both men and women.

Why see a dermatologist for alopecia?

Dermatologists can assess and diagnose alopecia by examining the patient’s scalp, evaluating their medical history, and considering their symptoms. Diagnostic methods for alopecia may include a physical examination of the scalp, pulling on the hair to assess shedding, and even scalp biopsies if necessary. Depending on the type of hair loss, there are several options for treatment. These can include oral or topical minoxidil, hormonal therapies, or immunomodulatory therapies.
