Neurotoxins

What is Botox?

Expressive movements in faces can result in the development of wrinkles as we age. By preventing these movements, we halt the repetitive folding of the skin and deepening of lines and wrinkles. Neurotoxins, which include the brand names Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin, block the nerve impulses that tell muscles of expression in our faces to move.

At Dermatology Duluth, we use Botox and similar products to erase some of these early signs of aging.

Why see a dermatologist for Botox?

While the word “toxin” can sound intimidating, the use of these products when administered by a dermatologist is very safe. These toxins are slightly different variations of Botulinum Toxin, a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. In small, controlled, precise doses by a qualified physician, these treatments are safe and very effective.

What can be treated with Botox?

Many lines on the face can be reduced or eliminated with botox: horizontal lines on the forehead, scowl lines between the brows, crows feet, and pucker lines around the mouth.

We can also take advantage of the relaxing effects or Botox to:

  • Lift the lateral brow
  • Relax peri-oral muscles for a “lip flip”
  • Lift the corners of the mouth to prevent a resting frown
  • Correct a “gummy smile”
  • Soften a dimpling chin (orange peel texture)
  • Relax the tight muscles of the neck to give a more defined jawline

What to expect at your Botox treatment

Appointments are usually about 15 minutes, though an additional 20-30 minutes may be added if the patient would like to have topical numbing medicine applied beforehand.  Please allow time for check-in with our welcoming front desk staff. The effects of Botox last 3-4 months, at which time most patients see a slow return of wrinkles.
